Individual content items that you can find in ProQuest African American Heritage include images from microfilm collections and pages from books, delivered as Adobe PDF files.
Images from Collections
Birth, Marriage, Death images
You can find Marriage and Cohabitation images through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available with the image differ slightly depending on whether you searched or browsed.
With a Marriage or Cohabitation record image displayed, you can:
- Review the citation — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Add the image citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the image is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the item. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Jump to a transcription — Click the Transcription link to jump to a listing of textual data below the image. Handwriting on the original documents, as seen in the images, can often be difficult to read. The transcription often provides welcome clarity.
- Print the image — Click Print to display a clean copy of the item. Use the browser's File/Print command or Print button.
- Download the image — Click Download to save or open the image:
- Save or open the image as a .tif file.
- Save or open the image as an Adobe PDF.
- Open the image in Adobe Reader.
- View the image positive or negative — Positive (normal) is the default image view. Click Negative to view the image in reverse. Some older or damaged images may be easier to read in negative view.
- Zoom the image view — Enlarge or shrink the displayed image. Selections are 100%, 200% (the default), or 400%
- Navigate to the previous or next image in your search results (Search mode only) — Use the Name left/right arrows at the upper right of the page to move to the previous or next image record in your search results.
- Browse images from the current location (Browse mode only) — You can use the left/right Image arrows to display the previous or next images for the current Location.
- Change your browse location (Browse mode only) — Your browse path is displayed above the image, rather than citation information for a particular image record. Each step in your path is a link. Click a link to return to the Browse page, with that step in your path selected.
- Go to a specific image on the current microfilm role (Browse mode only) — Use the box and Go button in the upper right corner.
- Back to Search Results (Search mode only) — Click the link to return to your search results list.
Federal Census images
You can find Federal Census images through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available on the image display page differ slightly.
With a Federal Census record image displayed, you can:
- Review the citation — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Add the image citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the image is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the item. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Print the image — Click Print to display a clean copy of the item. Use the browser's File/Print command or Print button. If you want to print the image in its original over-sized dimensions, click one of the Acrobat Reader version links above the image to learn how.
- Download the image — Click Download to save or open the image:
- Save or open the image as a .tif file.
- Save or open the image as an Adobe PDF.
- Open the image in Adobe Reader.

- Navigate between the two pages related to this image (Search mode only) — The Federal Census form contains multiple columns, causing to spread across two pages. When the census images were scanned to microfilm, the result was two pages for each form image. Use the Subpage A and Subpage B links to move from one page to the other.
- Page though all images originally on the same microfilm roll (Search mode only) — Use the Page left/right arrows at the upper right of the page to move to the previous or next image that originally appeared on the same microfilm roll. The microfilm series and roll are displayed beneath the page heading.
- Navigate to the previous or next image in your search results Search mode only) — Use the Name left/right arrows at the upper right of the page to move to the previous or next image record in your search results.
- Back to Search Results (Search mode only) — Click the link to return to your search results list.
- Browse images from the current location (Browse mode only) — You can use the left/right Image arrows to display the previous or next images for the current Location.
- Change your browse location (Browse mode only) — Your browse path is displayed above the image, rather than citation information for a particular image record. Each step in your path is a link. Click a link to return to the Browse page, with that step in your path selected.
Freedman's Bank images
You can find Freedman's Bank images through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available with the image differ slightly.
With a Freedman's Bank record image displayed, you can:
- Review the citation — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Add the image citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the image is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the item. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Jump to a transcription — Click the Transcription link to jump to a listing of textual data below the image. Handwriting on the original documents, as seen in the images, can often be difficult to read. The transcription often provides welcome clarity.

- Browse the entire register page — Click the link to display the bank register page image that contains the current record. Each bank register page contains eight individual records. With the bank register page displayed, you can use the box and Go button in the upper right corner to explore the entire bank register. Additionally, since you are now browsing the Branch Location corresponding to both the image you were looking at, and the bank register now displayed, is a link beneath the page title. You can click the link to go to the Browse page.
- Browse the Bank Location (Browse mode only) — The bank location is displayed above the image, rather than citation information for a particular image record. The bank location is a link. Click the link to return to the Browse page.
- Browse images from the current branch location (Browse mode only) — You can use the left/right Image arrows to display the previous or next images for the current branch location.
Military images
You can find military images through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available on the image display page differ slightly, depending on the record type (Draft Registrations or Service) and whether you searched or browsed.
With a military record image displayed, you can:
- Review the citation (Search mode only) — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Add the image citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the image is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the item. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Jump to a transcription (Search mode only) — Click the Transcription link to jump to a listing of textual data below the image. Handwriting on the original documents, as seen in the images, can often be difficult to read. The transcription often provides welcome clarity.

- Navigate between the front and back of WWII draft card images — Use the Card Front and Card Back tabs to switch between the two views of a WWII draft registration. There is no similar accommodation made for viewing WWI draft registrations, as they were filmed so that the front and back sides of the card display side-by-side.
- Navigate to the previous or next image in your search results (Search mode only) — Use the Name left/right arrows at the upper right of the page to move to the previous or next image record in your search results.
- Back to Search Results (Search mode only) — Click the link to return to your search results list.
- Browse images from the current location (Browse mode only) — You can use the left/right Image arrows to display the previous or next images for the current County (WWI), or Location (WWII).
- Change your browse location (Browse mode only) — Your browse path is displayed above the image, rather than citation information for a particular image record. Each step in your path is a link. Click a link to return to the Browse page, with that step in your path selected.
- Go to a specific image on the current microfilm role (Browse mode only) — Use the box and Go button in the upper right corner.
Slaves and Free(d) Persons of Color images
You can find Slaves and Free(d) Persons of Color images through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available on the image display page differ slightly, depending on whether you searched or browsed.
With a Slaves and Free(d) Persons of Color register image displayed, you can:
- Review the citation (Search mode only) — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Add the image citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the image is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the item. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.

- Go to a specific image on the current microfilm role (Browse mode only) — Use the box and Go button in the upper right corner.
Images from Publications
You can find and view page images from publications by searching, or by browsing. A search returns a search results list. Browsing, a browse list.
The Citation
When you click an item in either your search results or in a browse list, the item's citation is displayed. The citation page includes:
- Citation detail — Information about the publication such as author name, publisher city, and date published.
- Search keyword highlighting (Search mode only) — Your search terms are highlighted.
- Browse by Page Number — A link that provides access to a table listing all page numbers as links to the corresponding page images.
- Next/Previous Results (Search mode only) — Links that let you display citations for adjacent items in your search results.
- Go to First Search Hit (Search mode only) — Click the link to display the first page image that contains an occurrence of your search terms.
- Add to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the publication. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Table of Contents — Each section of the book is listed in order. The title of each section is a link. Click the link to display the first page image of the corresponding section.
- Search term hits (Search mode only) — Presented as links, the number of occurrences of your search terms corresponding to sections in the publication are displayed. Click a numbered link to display the first page image that contains an occurrence of your search terms.
The Image
With a Publications image displayed, you can:
- View the citation — Citation information for the displayed image record appears above the image.
- Access the publication's table of contents
- Add the publication's citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for the publication is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the publication. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Print the image — Click Print to display a clean copy of the item. Use the browser's File/Print command or Print button.
- Download the image — Click Download to save or open the image as an Adobe PDF.

- Browse by page number — Display a listing of all page numbers in the publication. Each page number is a link. The Browse by Page Number page also provides links to view the publication's citation or table of contents.
- Back to Search Results (Search mode only) — Click the link to return to your search results list.
Pages from Black Genesis
You can find Black Genesis pages through a search, or through a browse. Features and options that are available with the image differ slightly.
With a Black Genesis displayed, you can:
- View the citation — Citation information for Black Genesis appears above the image.
- Access Black Genesis's table of contents
- Add Black Genesis's citation to My Notebook — Select the checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook. The citation for Black Genesis is immediately added to My Notebook. When you select the checkbox, a Take Notes link displays next to the checkbox. Click the link to display the Notes dialog box and enter any notes about the publication. If you enter notes, the Take Notes link toggles to View Notes when you close the dialog box.
- Print the displayed page — Click Print This Page to display a clean copy of the item. Use the browser's File/Print command or Print button.
- Download the image — Click Download to save or open the image as an Adobe PDF.
- Page though Black Genesis — Use the Page left/right arrows at the upper right of the page.
- Find occurrences of search hits (Search mode only) — Use the Hit left/right arrows at the upper right of the page.
- Back to Search Results (Search mode only) — Click the link to return to your search results list.
My Notebook—a Place for Storing Citations and Notes
My Notebook is a storage place for citations of items of interest that you find during your current session. You can open My Notebook at any time by clicking the My Notebook link at the right side of the navigation toolbar at the top of every page. Throughout ProQuest African American Heritage, you'll see a checkbox labeled Add to My Notebook in the following locations:
- On all search results pages, with a checkbox corresponding to each item listed.
- On all publications or book citation/table of contents page.
- On all displayed image pages.
Things to know about My Notebook include:
- Maximum of 500 citations — You can store a maximum of 500 citations in My Notebook during your current session.
- Contents automatically deleted when your session ends — Your current session ends when there is at least 30 minutes of no keyboard or mouse interaction with ProQuest African American Heritage. When your session ends, all citations in My Notebook are deleted.
- Delete an item from My Notebook — Click the red (X) icon corresponding to any citation in My Notebook to delete it.
- Delete all citations from My Notebook — Click Empty My Notebook to delete all citations.
- Print all citations — Click Print All. In the Print dialog box, enter an optional title or comment. Click Print. Your citations print as a simple text file. Any notes that you entered are included with the corresponding citation(s).
- Download all citations — Click Download All. In the Download dialog box, enter an optional title or comment. Click Download. You are prompted to save the contents to a simple text file. Any notes that you entered are included with the corresponding citation(s).
- Email all citations — Click Email All. In the Email dialog box, enter your email address. Click Send email. Your citations are included in the body of the simple text email message. Any notes that you entered are included with the corresponding citation(s).
- Enter notes about a citation — Click the Take Notes link corresponding to any citation in My Notebook. In the Notes dialog box, enter your note and click Save Notes. The Take Notes link changes to View Notes. The notes will be included with the corresponding citation(s) when you print, download, or email the contents of My Notebook.
