About

ETD Dashboard provides you with the ability to draw insights gained from analyzing retrievals of your dissertations and theses by users at universities around the world. You can also benchmark retrievals of your research versus retrievals of research published at other universities.

ETD Dashboard can help you make decisions about how to allocate resources across your university—for example, by identifying research areas or departments that are generating a lot, or a little in the way of retrievals.

ProQuest Login: What you need to know

A ProQuest Login account provides you with a single username/password combination you can use to access multiple ProQuest products an administrator has authorized you to use. Products that currently support the ProQuest Login feature include My Research, ProQuest Text and Data Mining, and ProQuest ETD Dashboard.

In a ProQuest Login account, your username is your email address. Your email address is the foundation of your identity as a ProQuest Login account user. You cannot change your email address. Similarly, your password will be the same for all products you have access to using your ProQuest Login account.

Whether you are logging in to My Research, ProQuest Text and Data Mining, or ETD Dashboard, you must use the same email/password combination. You can always reset your password from the product Login page in any of these products by clicking Forgot your password?

Important — Remember, if you reset your password from the Login page of any of these products, you are changing it for all of them.
You will also have received a second ProQuest-branded email with the title Password Change Request to let you reset your password. With your password reset, you can now use the same email/password combination to access other ProQuest products that use the ProQuest Login feature, including My Research, and ProQuest Text and Data Mining.

Dashboard View

The ETD Dashboard view is a summary of the six available data visualizations in a single view. You can access each visualization as a separate page by hovering over the visualization panel in the dashboard and clicking Interact as it displays in the center of the visualization. You can also navigate to each visualization by using the left-side menu. To print this view, click the Print icon at the top right of the dashboard.

Visualizations

ETD Dashboard provides the following six data visualizations, presented as five charts and one map:

Historical Retrieval Trends — A line graph showing how retrievals of your research in PQDT are trending over time.
Top Subjects — A circle-packing chart presenting the 50 most-retrieved subject areas, as evidenced by retrievals of research authored at your university. Each circle corresponds to a specific subject. When a circle is large enough, both the subject name and the corresponding number of retrievals display within the circle.

If a circle is very small, due to low frequency of the corresponding subject, hover to see the subject name and number of retrievals in a tooltip.

Use the Show dropdown above the visualization to specify the number of subject circles to show: 10, 30, or 50 (the default).

Important to knowA dissertation or thesis can be tagged with multiple subjects from the fixed list of ProQuest subject categories. The author can tag these subjects during the submission process, or a ProQuest editor might assign additional subject tags as they prepare to publish the work to ProQuest. This means that a given title can be included in multiple subject counts. For example, a title might be tagged with both Aeronautics and Astronautics and Aerospace engineering, thereby contributing to retrieval counts for both subjects.

Top Retrievals — A list of the 30 most-retrieved dissertations and theses authored at your university. The corresponding number of retrievals is displayed above each title. The author name and published date display beneath each title. Click a title to retrieve and view the dissertation or thesis in ProQuest in a new browser tab.

Use the Show dropdown above the list to specify the number of titles to display: 10, 30 (the default), or 50 titles.

Usage by Country — This world map reveals retrieval numbers of your research in countries around the world. Hover a country to display the country name and corresponding retrievals number. A sortable table beneath the map allows you to view retrievals data for all countries at once. Please note: Usage data for China, Taiwan, and South Korea may be incomplete.

Retrievals by Any University — Want to see what universities are generating the most use of your dissertations and theses as retrievals from PQDT? This horizontal bar chart shows you. By default, you’re comparing to retrievals at universities in the Times Higher Education's Top 200 World University Rankings.

Use the Comparison groups filter to select a different default group, such as Carnegie R1 or R2, or any custom groups you created using with the My University Groups selector tool.
Use the Show dropdown above the visualization to specify the number of universities to reflect in the chart: 10 (the default), 30, or 50.

Retrievals Benchmarking — This chart reflects the ratio of the total number of retrievals in PQDT of dissertations and theses published from your university, over the total number of your university’ s dissertations and theses published in PQDT.

Your university’s ratio is reflected as a numeric score. Using the same calculation, Low, Mean, and High scores reflect corresponding ratios for universities in your selected comparison group. These numbers give you a basis for comparing how much of your research in PQDT is being accessed, versus research from other universities, normalized by the size of their dissertations and theses library.

Numbers reflect selected Retrieval period and Degree year date ranges.

The Low, Mean, and High ratio numbers are not visibly identified with a specific university in the comparison group.

By default, you’re benchmarking your retrievals score against universities in the Times Higher Education's Top 200 World University Rankings.

Use the Comparison groups filter to select a different default group, such as Carnegie R1 or R2, or any custom groups you created using functionality on the My University Groups page.

Important to know — A “retrieval” is defined as any user interaction with content items, including:
A retrieval of a dissertation record is recorded each time any of these actions is performed. Note that a single dissertation record can have many retrievals. Retrievals are recorded for all dissertations and theses records accessed by users on the ProQuest Platform.
Important to know — Benchmark calculations may not include all institutions that belong to pre-defined comparison groups, as some institutions do not include their graduate works in the PQDT database. We provide a list of the institutions that submit with us that are members of the comparison groups. These lists are dynamic and subject to change.

Using Filters

With a visualization displayed, the filter panel at the right of the page provides controls allowing you to modify the data underlying the visualization. When you apply your filter selections, the visualization updates in real time.

Retrieval period

Valid date ranges are 2012 through any year up to and including the current year. Retrieval period is an available filter for all visualizations.

Retrieval period begins with 2012 because that is the year when ProQuest completed migration of all customers to the then-new ProQuest platform, allowing for accurate and complete retrieval data.

Degree year

Represents the year the author received their degree and typically completed their dissertation or thesis. Enter a degree-year range. PQDT provides abstract and indexing for dissertations and theses from as early as the 17th century (1600–1699). Full text begins to become available for some works in the 18th century.

Degree type

The Degree type drop-down defaults to All, meaning the visualization will reflect retrievals of either of the degree types shown above. Degree type is an available filter for all visualizations.

Format

A dissertation or thesis can be available in one or more of the following three formats:

Comparison groups

The Comparison groups filter is available for these two visualizations only:
Use the My University Groups page to create and save additional groups of universities you can later select with the Comparison groups filter for customized views.
Selections on the Comparison groups menu include:
Times Higher Ed Top 200 is the default selection.

When you create a custom group, you are required to provide a unique name for the group. Your custom groups are then alphabetically ordered on the Comparison groups menu, following Times Higher Ed as indicated above.

Filter by subjects

When student-authors are submitting their dissertation or thesis to ProQuest, they select one or more subjects from a fixed list, associating subjects with their submitted research. ProQuest editors may also tag the work with additional subjects from the same list as they prepare the work for publishing to the ProQuest Platform.

Filter by subjects provides the same ProQuest subject list authors select from. Use Filter by subjects to limit the displayed chart or map to show retrievals of only those dissertations or theses tagged with one or more of your selected subjects. With a visualization displayed:
  1. Click Filter by subjects to display the corresponding popup.
  2. Select subjects from the list on the left. Your selected subjects populate to the box on the right.
    Click the leading red ‘X’ to remove a selected subject.
    Click the Clear link above the right-side box to remove all selected subjects.
  3. Click Done.
  4. Click Apply filters to update the chart to reflect your selections.
Filter by subjects is an available filter for all visualizations except Top Subjects. There is no limit to the number of subjects you can select. There is an assumed OR relationship between the subjects you select. For example, “Show me usage of dissertations about African American Studies OR African Studies OR Black Studies.”

Save filtered view

If you’ve applied one or more filters to a visualization and want to preserve that view of the visualization, click Save filtered view. The next time you display the visualization—whether it’s during your current session, or in a future session initiated when you log out and log back in—the visualization will continue to reflect that last set of filter changes you selected. That state of the visualization is the ‘last saved state.’
If you apply filter selections to a visualization and do not click Save filtered view, then leave that visualization and return to it later—either during the same session, or after logging out and then back in to start another session—your applied filter selections are lost. If you’ve never clicked Save filtered view, the last saved state will be the original filter defaults in effect when you first got your account.
Saved filter selections apply to the currently displayed visualization only.

Reset filters

With any visualization displayed, click Reset filters to restore it to the last saved state. For example, if you’ve selected and applied filtering changes and then decide it’s not what you want, click Reset filters to revert to the last saved state.
 
 

Changing Your Personal Account Information

To change the following personal information, click Account Details in the account menu at the top-right of each page:
Important to know — Your email address is displayed as read-only. It provides the foundation of your identity as a user of ProQuest products you are authorized for, like ProQuest Text and Data Mining, and My Research. Contact your administrator if you need to change your email address.

Changing your password

  1. Go to the Log in page. If you are in the application, click Log Out on the Account menu. The Login page displays.
  2. In the Log in box in the center of the page, click Forgot your password?.
  3. Enter the email address associated with your ProQuest account.
  4. You will receive a ProQuest-branded email with the title Password Change Request. Open the email.
  5. Click the button labeled Change password.
  6. Enter and confirm your new password.
Important to know — Your identity as a ProQuest user is anchored to a single email address you provide. That email address is the foundation for your access to other ProQuest products you may have a ProQuest Login account for, like My Research, or ProQuest Text and Data Mining. Similarly, your password must also remain the same across these ProQuest products. Keep in mind, that if you change your password while in one product, like ETD Dashboard, you’ll also be changing it for other ProQuest products you are authorized to, like My Research, and ProQuest Text and Data Mining.
Contact your administrator if you need to change the email address associated with your ProQuest identity.  

My University Groups

To create your own custom groups for use with the Retrievals by Any University or Retrievals Benchmarking visualizations:
  1. Click My University Groups in the account menu at the top right of any page.
  2. Click the Create a new group button.
  3. Enter a unique name for your new group at the bottom of the form. You cannot have more than one group with the same name.
  4. Select at least two, and up to fourteen universities from the list at the left. By default, your university will always be included in any custom group. When you edit a group, you cannot remove your university; it must be included in the group. Your selected universities populate to the box on the right.
  1. Click Save. A link corresponding to your new group's name now displays at the left of the page, beneath this heading: Your current groups. You can delete or edit your groups.
You can now select your new group from the Comparison groups filter dropdown, with either the Retrievals by Any University or Retrievals Benchmarking visualizations displayed.
You can only edit custom groups that you create. You cannot edit the default-supplied Times Higher Ed or Carnegie groups.

What’s New

Click What’s New on the account menu at the top right of any page to view current and archived information about new features and functionality in ETD Dashboard releases.

Download and Print

Download: CSV

With any visualization displayed, click the Download icon above the visualization. Select CSV from the dropdown. The data underlying the visualization is exported to a comma-separated values (CSV) file you can open or save in a spreadsheet application.
When you look at the CSV file, your format selection is shown in bolded shorthand here as follows:

Download: PNG

With a visualization displayed, click the Download icon above the visualization. Select PNG from the dropdown. You can open or save the PNG. It will contain the displayed visualization, along with a timestamp. Note: Download to PNG is not available for Top Retrievals or Retrievals by Country.

Print

On the Dashboard page, or with any visualization displayed, click the Print icon above the visualization.

For Administrators Only

Managing users

To add a user:
  1. Click Manage Users in the account menu at the top right of the page.
  2. Click the button labeled Add a user.
  3. In the popup, provide input or selections for all fields. All fields are required.
  4. Click Add user.
Important — Users need to understand that if they change their password while in one product, like ETD Dashboard, they’ll also be changing it for other ProQuest products they are authorized to using the ProQuest Login feature, like My Research, and ProQuest Text and Data Mining.
You can also use controls on the Manage Users page to disable and enable individual accounts. A user whose account is disabled cannot log in to ETD Dashboard.
Except for Disable | Enable, click any column heading to sort the table. By default, the table sorts on Last name (A–Z).

Administrators can assign one of the following two roles to a new user:

ETD Dashboard access from ETD Administrator

ETD Administrator is a free application for managing ETD submission workflows. ProQuest provides ETD Administrator to any university that submits at least one dissertation or thesis for publishing on the ProQuest Platform. If you have ETD Administrator, you will see a link to access ETD Dashboard when both of the following are true:
Click the link and you will be authenticated directly into ETD Dashboard without having to log in.
